Twitter Wins The Social Share Game

A couple of interesting stories at Marketing Pilgrim show that Twitter is winning the social share game while Facebook is limiting the number of Page posts shown in users’ news feeds. So what does this mean for social media marketers?

If you have a Facebook Page, I wouldn’t panic. It seems that the posts Facebook is targeting are posts where Page admins are asking people to Like, Comment, or Share on a post just to boost its visibility in their friends’ news feeds. It seems the friends find that a bit annoying. If you engage in this practice, maybe you should scale back on the “Like-baiting.”

That doesn’t mean you have to end the practice completely. Just be judicious in how you do it.

Regarding Twitter, I think it’s a great place to share your posts. It always has been. But the news that more people are sharing posts on Twitter is good news for you and me. If you don’t have social share icons on your website and blog posts, now is the time to add them – especially a Twitter icon. But don’t leave out other social networks either.

You should also understand the demographics of the social websites. Facebook is made up mostly of older people – over 50. Younger people are flocking to Instagram.

Just a few things you should know.
